The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Mumbai Police to register a case against actor Ranbir Kapoor, the producers of the web series The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, and streaming platform Netflix for allegedly violating the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.The action comes after a complaint filed by Vinay Joshi, who pointed out that a scene in the show depicted Ranbir Kapoor smoking an e-cigarette without any statutory warning or disclaimer. The complainant argued that such portrayals could mislead and negatively influence young viewers.  Taking note of the issue, the NHRC has also issued a notice to the Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging immediate steps to restrict such content and ensure compliance with laws prohibiting the advertisement or promotion of electronic cigarettes. Additionally, the Mumbai Police Commissioner has been asked to investigate the operations and identity of manufacturers and importers involved in e-cigarette circulation, in line with the 2019 ban.
